Pleurotoid Series
Artist Statement
Pleurotoid is a series of artworks that explores the intricate beauty and scientific significance of the oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus. The title, derived from the scientific classification of the mushroom, reflects the series' focus on closely examining organic matter under microscopes, akin to scientific practices.
The process of creating each piece in the series begins with a reference photo of the mushroom, which is used to plan and capture shapes related to light, medium, and dark values. Once the drawing is planned, continuous lines are used to abstract the subject matter, recontextualizing the image and inviting viewers to interpret the subject in various ways.
The paintings in the series employ a process of layering and sanding to visually represent the passage of time and history, creating depth and complexity. Each new drawing of the mushroom is strategically placed within the overall composition to achieve balance and harmony.
Most compositions in the series are all-over compositions, taking up the entire surface. This compositional strategy, when viewed from afar, may seem void of detail and visual interest. However, upon closer examination, viewers are rewarded with a plethora of detail that engages and captivates, inviting them to discover new intricacies with each look.
The series also plays with the idea of micro and macro studies, relating to close-up examination while also having a zoomed-out effect when viewed from afar, resembling topography. This approach reflects the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature, as well as the reciprocal relationship between life and death in nature.
Overall, Pleurotoid is a series that celebrates the beauty and complexity of the oyster mushroom while inviting viewers to contemplate the reciprocal relationships that exist in nature and in our everyday lives.
